In this first phase we asked Breaking the Game participants to send in proposals for what they would like to do within the context of an online symposium, to articulate a framework, or a perspective about their work in relationship to the three themes Hybridity, Overclocking the City, and The Virtual as Interface to Self and Society. We posted those to Breaking the Game website. Immediately we began conducting spontatneous and exploratory online conversations which we recorded using Skype (internet telephone software) and iChat (video conferencing software). In some instances we visited 3D worlds together to discuss work while maintaining audio links to one another. We posted these encounters below.

As a first phase we will map out a loose terrain of overlapping ideas, interests, and practices, while creating a network for ongoing discussion about our specific projects.

Please note that the following movies are not edited yet. Some movies and skype conversations are still being processed and will be available soon. Out of these mutual discussions we will hone in on more specific issues and begin to define Breaking the Game's next stage.

*For optimal viewing you must have access to broadband and the latest version of QuickTime (version 7.0.4).

Walkthrough in Second Life with Jerry Paffendorf
Skype conversation and simultaneous walkthrough with Jerry Paffendorf to Sheep Island in Second Life. Jerry talks about the Electric Sheep Company, a small consulting group that seeks to help organizations find ways to use Second Life to realize their business, educational, and marketing goals. While located physically in Washington D.C., the company has a 3D building in Second Life where their avatars hold meetings, stream video presentations, and listen to creative briefings. Jerry also talks about a "mixed reality event" he and others produced at R & B coffee house, where event participants could look into a digital simulation of the same coffee house in Second Life and interact with its avatars, while Second Life avatars could visit the digital simulation and watch live streaming video of the same event from the actual coffee house.

Introductory Skype conversation with Matt Adams, founding member of the London-based artist collective Blast Theory
Matt Adams and Workspace Unlimited's Thomas Soetens and Kora Van den Bulcke reflect upon the different ways their artistic practices open up cultural spaces within the overlapping domains of information technologies, public space, and urban life. Adams discusses his new work Day of the Figurines, a participatory mobile phone narrative that uses SMS; Soetens and Van den Bulcke talk about their new work Implant, a networked navigable 3D virtual world that posits an alternative model of the city of Gent as well as an imaginary version of the actual cultural center where the piece will be installed. Both articulate the benefits and limitations of the category "game" for thinking through, designing, and building their work. Finally, Matt ends with a series of provocations: Information technologies have thoroughly socialized individuals for the purposes of increasing production and consumption. Any kind of resistance has failed in the interest of capital. Artists' and other culture workers' claims to the "liberating" potential of information technologies are exaggerated and rhetorical at best.
